About 'I Went Away'
iwentaway.com is intentionally a very basic and simple application. It's for those when you want to leave a note on your desktop as you run to grab a coffee, or take a quick bathroom break before the big meeting. You want to make sure if people come over to find you, they know not to wander off. Rather than scribbling on a post-it, or opening up a word doc, or trying to email people or update your ichat status, you instead go to iwentaway.com type in your message and hit enter, job done.
That is one example of how it could be used, we already use it at home for my wife to leave me notes that she would previously scribbled with a crayon on the back of a pad and I would never see. She knows I get up and look at the computer, now she can leave me notes about where she went in the morning and when she'll be back that she knows I'll see.
Of course as with all technology, I do plan to try to add to it, make it better. First complaint I got from a few people was that there was no ownership for the posts, so I'm planning on adding a super simple optional registration (highlight optional, it will still be possible to just add a note quickly without one).
The second thing I plan to look at is after registration, it would be good if posting a message updated a few other places online where people might look. First stop will be posting your new away message to twitter (which I know a lot of folks use these days).
I've established a Twitter account for "I Went Away" that gets updated with all messages marked as allow to be public, once I get user accounts in, you'll be able to add your twitter username and password and it'll post your messages to your account as well, just to keep you in sync.
Beyond that who knows. If anyone has any great suggestions or issues, don't hesitate to drop me a line at JP@iwentaway.com
